About the Artist
Joel was raised in Clarkston, WA and graduated from Clarkston High School in 1969. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Drawing and Painting from Western Washington University in 1973.
He started his college years at Columbia Basin Junior College with a baseball scholarship. Joel signed pro with the New York Yankees in the summer of 1970 and played two summer seasons and one spring season as a relief pitcher.
After graduating from WWU, Joel moved to Spokane and began his first art studio and gallery, the Art of Imagination, which opened at the same time as World Expo ‘74. The emphasis for his gallery was fine art prints, all produced and printed on site.
Joel moved back to the Lewis-Clark valley in the spring of 1975, and in 1977 went to work as an apprentice jeweler at Thill’s Jewel Box in Clarkston. In 1987, Joel obtained his graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America, Santa Monica, CA. This intensive course of study included certifications in Diamond Grading and Evaluation, and Colored Gems and Gem Identification.
In 1990 Joel opened Joel DeTray Jewelers in Clarkston. For 28 years Joel has specialized in custom design and manufacturing and lives up to his reputation as the “Jeweler with the Artist’s Touch”. Besides custom designed jewelry, Joel’s art endeavors include intaglio printmaking (etchings, dry points, mono prints) and most recently a series of watercolors of autumn flowers, mainly roses. These are uniquely hand signed as his Diamond Signature Collection.

"I especially appreciate that you shared the 'vision' of what I wanted, even though it was technically very difficult to achieve. Instead of saying it couldn't be done you saw it as a challenge, and came through with flying colors. I also appreciate that you managed to do the work while staying within my limited budget. The ring is lovely, and I will enjoy wearing it in the years to come."
